About ReactionF1

Last updated April 21, 2026 ยท Editorial: ReactionF1

ReactionF1 turns the five-light race-start moment into a fast browser game, then explains how to interpret the result honestly.

What is ReactionF1?

ReactionF1 is a free browser-based game that simulates the moment of a Formula 1 race start. When the five red lights go out, drivers must react instantly to launch off the grid. The game recreates that sequence so you can measure your reaction time in milliseconds.

Built as a passion project by F1 fans, this game captures the essence of what makes race starts so thrilling. Whether you're a casual viewer or a die-hard motorsport enthusiast, you can now put your reflexes to the test and see how you compare to the professionals.

Who We Are

ReactionF1 is an independent project built by F1 fans and web developers. We're not affiliated with Formula One, the FIA, or any team. We built this because we love race starts-the tension of the five lights, the split-second reaction-and wanted a free, accurate way for anyone to test their reflexes.

This is a fan-made project. We are not affiliated with Formula One Group, FIA, or any F1 team. All Formula 1 trademarks belong to their respective owners. This site is for entertainment and education only.

We use performance.now() for millisecond-precision timing. Device latency affects results-see our device latency guide for details. Your data stays on your device.

How It Works

The game faithfully recreates the official F1 start procedure:

  1. Tap to begin - Press the start button or tap anywhere on the screen to initiate the sequence.
  2. Watch the lights - Five red lights illuminate one by one, each 350 milliseconds apart, just like on a real F1 starting gantry.
  3. Stay focused - After all five lights are on, there's a random delay between 1 and 3.5 seconds. This unpredictability is what makes F1 starts so challenging.
  4. Lights out! - When the lights go out, tap as fast as you can. Your reaction time is measured from the exact moment the lights extinguish.
  5. Get your result - See your reaction time, earn a rating, and track your personal best.

Tap too early and you'll get a false start - just like in a real race where jumping the lights means a penalty!

Measurement Methodology

ReactionF1 measures a clean attempt from the moment the lights go out to the moment your browser receives your input. The site uses the browser's high-resolution performance.now() timer, then calculates the difference in milliseconds. This is appropriate for a web-based educational tool, but it is not the same as FIA timing equipment, race-control sensors, or a lab reaction-time rig.

We separate clean reactions from false starts because guessing early is not the same as reacting. A useful result is one where you waited for lights out, responded after the signal, and can repeat similar times under similar conditions. Device latency, display refresh rate, browser performance, and input method all affect the measured result.

For the best comparison, use the same device, browser, and input method each time. Learn more in our guides to device latency and average reaction time.

Editorial Standards

ReactionF1's educational pages are written to support the original reaction-time tool. We focus on practical explanations: what the number means, what affects it, how F1 starts work, and how to compare results responsibly. We avoid medical claims, fake performance promises, copied content, or misleading claims about official Formula 1 affiliation.

When we mention benchmarks, we use broad educational ranges and explain the limits of online testing. Pages are periodically reviewed and updated as the tool, data, and site policies improve.

What is a Good Reaction Time?

Professional F1 drivers typically react in 150-250 milliseconds. The best starts in history have been around 100-150ms. Here's how we rate your performance:

โšก
Lightning Reflexes
< 150ms
Elite-level reactions, on par with the fastest F1 drivers
๐Ÿ
F1 Elite
150-180ms
Exceptional reflexes worthy of the starting grid
๐Ÿšฆ
Pro Driver
180-250ms
Professional-grade reactions, competitive start
๐Ÿ‘
Solid Start
250-330ms
Good reflexes, room for improvement
๐Ÿ”ฅ
Warming Up
330-500ms
Average reaction time, keep practicing
๐Ÿ’ช
Keep Practicing
> 500ms
With practice, you'll get faster

Why We Built This

Every F1 fan knows the tension of a race start. The formation lap, the drivers lining up, the five lights counting down - it's one of the most exciting moments in motorsport. We wanted to capture that feeling and let anyone experience it, anytime, anywhere.

This game is completely free, works on any device with a browser, and requires no downloads or sign-ups. Your stats are saved locally on your device, so you can track your improvement over time and challenge your friends to beat your best time.
